Coastal and earth discovery of Saint-Malo

Monday, July 6, 2009 - Afternoon

14:45 Departure for a foot discovery of the fortified city.

Capital of the sea, at the same time famous seaside resort and listed as City of the Arts, Saint-Malo has got a rich maritime history and has brought forth numerous well-known men.
The visit starts with a tour around the ramparts, the main entrance of which is Saint-Vincent Gate (1709) which used to be the main gate of the ancient town. The rampart walk offers magnificent views of the coast and islands, especially at high tide.
Stroll along the ancient streets of the town. You will discover the hotel de la Gicquelais where Chateaubriand was born on September 4, 1768, and the house of the Duchess Anne.

16:20 Boat trip along the coast from Saint-Malo to Dinard, which takes you back to the days of the corsairs. You will be impressed by the mighty forts and ramparts: Le Petit Bé, Harbour Island, La Conchée, Le Grand Bé (Chateaubriand’s grave).

Half-day excursion to Dinan

Wednesday, July 8, 2009 - Morning

08:30 Departure from Saint-Malo on an ancient road leaving over the new Chateaubriand bridge from where visitors have a beautiful view over the Rance river.

09:30 Arrival at Dinan. Free time.
Dinan is uniquely located at the edge of a 75m (279ft) high plateau overlooking the Rance river.
  • Place des Merciers surrounded by beautiful half-timbered houses with wooden porches (15th till 17th centuries).
  • The Clock-Tower (15th century) comprising the bell known as Anne, offered in 1507 by Duchess Anne.
  • The Romanesque Church Saint-Sauveur (12th century). Behind the church, you will cross the English Garden in order to get to the ramparts which are the most impressive and ancient ones in Brittany (13th and 14th centuries). Magnificient view over the Rance river and the viaduct of Lanvallay. 
Walking along narrow medieval streets, you will then arrive at the fortified Jerzual Gate (14th century) and continue on Jerzual Road lined by triangulargabled houses with wooden facades going back to the 16th century and now occupied by artists.

11:00 Rendez-vous at the port for a little boat trip.
This canal cruise takes you from Dinan past castle ruins. Take a scenic 1h
round trip on a lovely old pleasure boat along the river, through locks and past the Saint-Magloire Abbey ruins of the castle.

Return to Saint-Malo.
